The exercise is aimed at updating voter lists, enrolling eligible citizens, and correcting errors ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The announcement is particularly important for first-time voters, people who have recently turned 18 or will become eligible to vote, and existing voters who need to correct their details in the electoral roll.
The Election Commission issued its instructions to the Chief Electoral Officers on October 15, 2026. The revision will be carried out under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

Election Commission Announces Voter List Revision: How Can Voters Add or Correct Their Names?
Eligible citizens should check the draft voter list when it is published. The usual forms for electoral-roll applications are:
- Form 6: Apply for inclusion of a name in the electoral roll.
- Form 7: Apply for deletion of a name or submit an objection to an entry.
- Form 8: Apply for correction of details or other permitted changes.
Applications should be submitted through the appropriate Election Commission portal or the relevant electoral registration authorities. Voters should verify the applicable instructions before submitting an application.
The Commission has also directed officials to ensure that eligible citizens are not left out and ineligible entries are not included. Aadhaar submission is voluntary for this exercise, according to the reported instructions.
What Is the Difference Between SSR and SIR?
The Special Summary Revision (SSR) is a process for updating the existing electoral roll by adding eligible voters, correcting errors and processing valid deletions. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a separate, more intensive verification exercise.
West Bengal is included in the newly announced SSR phase, while states and Union Territories undergoing or recently completing SIR will follow separate schedules where specified by the Election Commission.
The Election Commission’s latest announcement gives voters in West Bengal and 16 other states and Union Territories an opportunity to check their electoral details ahead of the 2027 qualifying date. Citizens should check the draft roll once it is published and submit any necessary application or objection within the announced deadline.
