GATE 2027 Registration Through DigiLocker

A particularly important instruction for Indian candidates is that GATE 2027 registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals.

IIT Madras has advised candidates to create or update a verified DigiLocker account before registration.

During the registration process, details such as the candidate’s name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, profile photograph, address, and verified ID information can be fetched through the digital verification process.

Therefore, candidates should not wait until the last day to create or verify their DigiLocker account.

What Documents Are Required for GATE 2027?

Candidates should keep their documents ready before the registration window opens.

Depending on the candidate’s circumstances, the application process may require information or documents such as:

  • Valid photo identity document
  • Recent passport-size colour photograph
  • Signature
  • Category certificate, where applicable
  • PwD certificate, where applicable
  • Relevant academic information
  • DigiLocker-linked identity information

An important point is that candidates do not need to upload their Class 10, Class 12, UG or PG marksheets to DigiLocker specifically for GATE 2027 registration. The official FAQ states that academic documents are not required for the examination process.

GATE 2027 Photograph Requirements

The photograph uploaded during the application process is important because the same photograph will appear on the GATE admit card and scorecard. The official instructions specify that candidates should upload a good-quality colour passport-size photograph measuring 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm.

The candidate’s face should cover approximately 60% to 70% of the photograph, with a white background. The photograph should show the face clearly from the front.

GATE 2027 Offers 30 Test Papers

GATE 2027 will be conducted for 30 test papers.

The official list includes papers covering Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, Humanities, Commerce and other disciplines.

Candidates can appear for one or up to two test papers, but if they choose two papers, the combination must be selected from the combinations officially permitted by GATE 2027.

New GATE 2027 Paper: Robotics and Automation

One of the major highlights of GATE 2027 is the introduction of a new test paper:

Robotics and Automation (RA)

This gives students interested in robotics, automation, and related technologies a dedicated GATE paper for the first time in GATE 2027.

The official website also states that changes have been made to the syllabus and paper structure in several areas.

Important Changes in GATE 2027

Candidates should be particularly careful about the updated syllabus and paper codes.

IIT Madras has announced:

  • Introduction of Robotics and Automation (RA)
  • Revised GATE syllabi
  • Changes to the Textile Engineering & Fibre Science paper
  • Changes in XE, XH and XL sectional paper codes
  • Updates to the Biotechnology syllabus
  • Updates to two-paper combinations

Candidates preparing using older GATE material should therefore download and follow the GATE 2027 syllabus, rather than relying only on previous-year syllabus documents.

GATE 2027 Exam Pattern

The GATE 2027 examination will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.

The question paper can contain:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

The General Aptitude section is common across GATE papers and carries 15 marks.

For most papers, the remaining 85 marks are allocated to the relevant subject component. However, some papers such as XE, XH and XL have their own sectional structures.

General Aptitude Section

The GA section consists of:

  • 5 questions carrying 1 mark each
  • 5 questions carrying 2 marks each

This makes a total of 15 marks.

IIT GATE 2027 Registration Examination Dates

The examination will be conducted over three weekends:

  • Week 1: February 6 and 7, 2027
  • Week 2: February 13 and 14, 2027
  • Week 3: February 20 and 21, 2027

The examination will be conducted in two sessions on the scheduled days. Candidates will have to appear according to the paper, date and session mentioned on their admit card.

GATE 2027 Examination Centres

The examination will be conducted at centres across 300+ cities in India.

There will be no international examination centres for GATE 2027. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens living abroad who wish to appear for GATE 2027 will need to travel to India and select an Indian examination city.

GATE Score Validity

The GATE 2027 score will remain valid for three years from the date of announcement of the results.

This can be useful for candidates who do not immediately take admission after receiving their GATE score and want to explore eligible postgraduate or doctoral opportunities during the validity period.

What Can You Do After Qualifying GATE?

GATE is not only an entrance examination for M.Tech programmes.

A valid GATE score can open several academic and career opportunities.

Postgraduate Admission

Candidates can use GATE scores to seek admission to various:

  • M.Tech programmes
  • M.E. programmes
  • M.Arch programmes
  • Master’s programmes
  • Other postgraduate programmes

depending on the eligibility criteria of the individual institute.

Doctoral Programmes

GATE scores may also be accepted for certain direct doctoral and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Humanities and other disciplines.

Financial Assistance

A qualifying GATE score can be used to seek financial assistance for eligible postgraduate and doctoral programmes, subject to the rules of the respective institute and government authority.

PSU Recruitment

Several Public Sector Undertakings have used GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes.

However, candidates should remember that qualifying GATE does not guarantee a PSU job. Recruitment depends entirely on the individual PSU’s notification, eligibility criteria, vacancies and selection process.

Does Qualifying GATE Guarantee Admission?

No.

This is an important point for every candidate.

A GATE qualification or score does not automatically guarantee admission, scholarship or employment.

Admission depends on the rules and eligibility criteria of the particular institute or programme.

Similarly, PSU recruitment depends on the concerned organisation’s recruitment notification and selection process.

GATE 2027 Preparation Strategy

Candidates who are targeting GATE 2027 should use the additional time before registration wisely.

The first step should be to download the revised GATE 2027 syllabus.

Students should then divide the syllabus into manageable sections.

Step 1: Understand the Syllabus

Do not prepare entirely from an old GATE syllabus.

Since the GATE 2027 syllabus has been revised, candidates should check the official syllabus for their selected paper.

Step 2: Build Strong Concepts

GATE tests understanding rather than simple memorisation.

Students should focus on fundamentals and practise applying concepts to numerical and conceptual problems.

Step 3: Solve Previous-Year Papers

Previous-year papers can help candidates understand:

  • Question difficulty
  • Important concepts
  • Question patterns
  • Time requirements
  • Common mistakes

Step 4: Practise Mock Tests

Full-length mock tests should become an important part of preparation closer to the examination.

Students should practise solving questions under the actual time limit.

Step 5: Analyse Mistakes

After every mock test, candidates should identify:

  • Questions answered incorrectly
  • Questions left unanswered
  • Time-consuming topics
  • Weak concepts

Regular analysis can be more useful than simply taking a large number of mock tests.

GATE 2027: A Story of a Student’s Preparation

For many engineering students, GATE is not just another competitive examination. It can represent a route towards a better postgraduate programme, research career or a future opportunity in the public sector.

Consider a final-year engineering student who had planned to appear for GATE 2027.

The student had already started studying, expecting the registration process to open in August. But when the registration schedule was revised, the application opening date moved to August 27, 2026.

Instead of worrying about the delay, the student used the extra time to check the revised syllabus, verify the DigiLocker account and prepare the required photograph and identity documents.

The student also noticed another important update: GATE 2027 has introduced a new Robotics and Automation paper and revised several syllabi and paper structures.

That meant the preparation strategy had to be updated.

The student downloaded the new syllabus, selected the appropriate GATE paper and began solving previous-year questions alongside the revised topics.

For candidates preparing seriously, this is the real importance of the registration-date revision. The extra days should not simply be treated as additional waiting time. They can be used to ensure that the application is correct and that preparation follows the latest official syllabus.

When the GOAPS portal finally opens on August 27, candidates who have already completed their DigiLocker verification and prepared their documents will be in a much better position to complete the application without last-minute pressure.
