Who Needs to Fill Choices?

Choice Filling is compulsory for candidates whose names are available in the merit list of:

  • ITI E Group
  • ITI M Group
  • Polytechnic First Year

Simply appearing in the merit list does not guarantee admission. You must submit and lock your college preferences within the given time.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fill Choices

Step 1: Log in

Visit the official admission portal and log in using your registered mobile number and OTP.

Step 2: Check Your Merit Details

After logging in, you can view:

  • General Rank
  • Category Rank
  • Application Details
  • Eligible Courses

Verify all information before proceeding.

Step 3: Click “Start Choice Filling”

According to your application, you will see options such as:

  • Start Choice Filling for ITI M Group
  • Start Choice Filling for ITI E Group
  • Start Choice Filling for Polytechnic

Click the appropriate option.

Step 4: Search Colleges

The new portal allows candidates to search in different ways.

You can search by:

  • District
  • Institute Name
  • Trade
  • Course

For example:

  • Select Bankura District.
  • View all Government ITIs available.
  • Select your preferred trade such as Electrician, Fitter, COPA, Welder, etc.

The portal also allows searching directly by trade, making it much easier than previous years.

Government vs PPP vs Private Colleges

One of the biggest changes this year is understanding different college categories.

1. Government ITI

  • These are fully government institutes with lower admission fees.
  • Highly recommended for most students.

2. PPP Government Colleges

These institutes have two different quota options.

Government Quota

  • Lower fees.
  • Admission is based on merit.

MQ (Management Quota)

  • Higher admission fees.
  • Seats remain available even if the Government quota is full.
  • Students should choose MQ only if they are willing to pay additional fees.

3. Private ITIs

Private colleges generally charge significantly higher tuition fees.

Unless you specifically wish to study in a private institute, most students should prioritise:

  • Government ITIs
  • PPP Government Quota

before considering private colleges.

How to Add Choices

Whenever you find your preferred trade:

Click Select (+)

The selected trade will move to your preference list on the right side.

You may continue adding as many colleges and trades as you want.

Is There Any Limit on Choice Filling?

No.

There is no fixed limit on the number of choices.

Experts recommend filling as many relevant Government and PPP Government options as possible to improve admission chances.

Arrange Choices Carefully

After adding colleges, you can:

  • Move a college up
  • Move it down
  • Delete unwanted choices
  • Rearrange priorities

Your order of preference is extremely important.

The Biggest Mistake Students Make

This is where many candidates lose better admission opportunities.

Suppose:

  • Choice 1 – Government ITI A
  • Choice 2 – Government ITI B
  • Choice 3 – Government ITI C

If you get Choice 1 in the first allotment, the counselling system considers that your highest preference has already been satisfied. You generally will not be upgraded to any other option because you have already received your top choice.

However, if you are allotted Choice 3, you may still become eligible for automatic upgradation to a higher preference in later counselling rounds, subject to seat availability.

This is why your first preference should always be the college where you genuinely want to study. Arrange your list from most preferred to least preferred, as the system allocates seats in that order.

Save Draft vs Choice Lock

Many students get confused here.

Save as Draft

  • Choices are saved.
  • You can still edit them.
  • You can rearrange preferences.
  • You can delete colleges.

Choice Lock

Once choices are locked and the deadline passes:

  • No editing
  • No deletion
  • No rearrangement
  • Final list submitted

Therefore, check everything carefully before locking your choices.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Day

Although the portal remains open until 29 July 2026, 11:59 PM, students should avoid waiting until the final hours.

Heavy server traffic or internet issues may prevent successful submission.

Complete your Choice Filling early and review it calmly before locking.

Major Changes in 2026 Admission Process

Compared to previous years, several important changes have been introduced:

  • New Common Admission Portal
  • New counselling interface
  • Simplified trade search
  • College-wise filtering
  • Trade-wise filtering
  • Updated merit list system
  • Different choice filling interface
  • Improved online dashboard

The counselling process is now more user-friendly than earlier years.

Expert Tips for Better Admission Chances

  • Fill as many Government colleges as possible.
  • Add PPP Government colleges after Government options.
  • Choose MQ (Management Quota) only if you are prepared for higher fees.
  • Keep your dream college as Preference No. 1.
  • Don’t fill random colleges just to increase numbers.
  • Review every choice carefully before locking.
  • Complete the process well before the deadline.
  • Keep screenshots or download confirmation after locking.

Choice Filling is the most critical stage of the West Bengal ITI and Polytechnic Admission 2026 process. A single mistake in arranging your preferences can affect your admission outcome.

Take your time, discuss your options with your family, prioritise the colleges where you truly wish to study, and complete the process before the deadline. If you are unsure about selecting colleges or trades, seek guidance before locking your choices.

Important: Choice Filling for ITI (E & M Group) and Polytechnic First Year is available only from 27 July 2026 to 29 July 2026 (11:59 PM) through the official West Bengal Common Admission Portal.

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের Common Admission Portal-এ ITI (E-Group, M-Group) ও Polytechnic 1st Year Admission 2026-এর Choice Filling ও Choice Locking শুরু হয়েছে।
