NMC Revised MBBS Seat Matrix 2026 Released: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a notification for the ‘Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses (excluding INIs) for the Academic Year 2026–27 as on 01.09.2026 – reg.’ NMC released the revised Undergraduate MBBS Seat Matrix for the academic year 2026-27, taking into account the latest permissions granted to new medical colleges as well as increases in the annual intake capacity of existing institutions.
The updated matrix is based on the position as on September 1, 2026 and covers MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges, while excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The NMC’s public notice is dated September 9, 2026, while the accompanying communication from the NMC Secretary is dated September 10, 2026.
According to the revised state-wise matrix, the total number of notified MBBS seats has reached 1,40,214 for the 2026-27 academic year. Of these, 63,971 seats are in government medical colleges and 76,243 seats are in private medical colleges.
NMC Revised MBBS Seat Matrix 2026: What has changed in the revised NMC MBBS Seat Matrix?
The latest seat matrix incorporates permissions and decisions issued after the earlier July update. The NMC has included:
- Permissions for establishing new MBBS medical colleges
- Increase in annual MBBS intake capacity of existing medical colleges
- Decisions of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB)
- Decisions of the 1st Appeal Committee of NMC
- Decisions of the 2nd Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
- Approvals granted under the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019
This means that the revised matrix is not simply a routine update. It reflects the latest approvals and seat increases that were available up to September 1, 2026.
1,40,214 MBBS seats notified
The state-wise summary included in the NMC document shows a total of 836 medical colleges and 1,40,214 MBBS seats for 2026-27, excluding INI seats.

West Bengal also figures in the revised NMC seat matrix.
As per the state-wise table, West Bengal has 41 medical colleges with a total of 7,350 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year.
The breakup is:
- 25 government medical colleges: 4,500 seats
- 16 private medical colleges: 2,850 seats
- Total: 7,350 MBBS seats
- Seats increased: 975

NMC Revised MBBS Seat Matrix 2026: Major states included in the revised matrix
The updated document contains a detailed college-wise and state-wise breakdown. Among the larger MBBS seat pools are states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana and West Bengal.
For example, the matrix records:
- Karnataka: 11,145 private seats and 4,600 government seats
- Tamil Nadu: 8,950 private seats and 5,349 government seats
- Uttar Pradesh: 8,700 private seats and 5,700 government seats
- Maharashtra: 7,249 private seats and 6,000 government seats
- Telangana: 6,050 private seats and 4,400 government seats
- West Bengal: 2,850 private seats and 4,500 government seats

Counselling committees must follow the revised seat matrix
The NMC has issued clear instructions to counselling authorities. The updated seat matrix is to be taken into consideration by the Central and respective State Counselling Committees while conducting counselling and admissions.
If a counselling committee finds any discrepancy or deviation in the approved number of seats, the matter must be referred to MARB for clarification.
Importantly, counselling authorities have been instructed not to allow admission against seats exceeding the number approved and notified by MARB.
Medical colleges cannot admit students beyond approved seats
The revised notification also places a direct responsibility on medical colleges.
All institutions have been directed to ensure that MBBS admissions for 2026-27 are made only against the number of seats approved and notified in the revised seat matrix.
The NMC has made it clear that admitting students beyond the approved annual intake will be treated as non-compliance with the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 and the regulations framed under it. Such violations may attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the concerned medical college or institution.
Private colleges given seven days for E-Bank Guarantee
Another important instruction in the public notice concerns private medical colleges that have received permission for establishing a new MBBS college or increasing their annual intake but have not yet submitted the required Electronic Bank Guarantee.
Such institutions have been directed to furnish the E-Bank Guarantee in favour of the Director, MARB, within seven days from the date of issuance of the public notice.
The Letter of Permission will be issued by MARB only after the required guarantee is received, verified and found to be in order.
NMC Revised MBBS Seat Matrix 2026: Seat matrix may still be revised
Candidates should also keep one important point in mind. The NMC has clearly stated that the revised seat matrix is not necessarily the final version.
It can be revised if there are subsequent decisions by an Appeal Committee or another competent authority. Any further revised matrix will be uploaded on the official NMC website and must then be considered by the Central and State Counselling Committees.

What does the revised matrix mean for NEET UG 2026 candidates?
The updated seat matrix is particularly important during NEET UG 2026 counselling because it provides the latest approved MBBS intake capacity of participating medical colleges.
Candidates should not rely only on older seat lists released earlier in the counselling season. Since the NMC has incorporated subsequent approvals and seat increases, the revised figures can affect the number of seats available at individual colleges.
At the same time, candidates should remember that the NMC matrix can undergo further changes. The final choices should therefore be made using the latest seat information published by NMC and the relevant counselling authority.
NMC asks colleges to verify their details
The Commission has also advised all medical colleges to carefully verify their details in the revised 2026-27 seat matrix.
If a college finds any discrepancy or omission relating to its institution or approved intake, it has been asked to immediately bring the matter to the notice of the President or Director, MARB, preferably before the counselling process begins.
