Who Can Apply for CSIR Technician Recruitment?

The basic educational requirement is 10th/SSC or equivalent with Science subjects and at least 55% marks, along with the prescribed trade qualification or relevant experience.

For most of the advertised trades, candidates can qualify through one of three routes:

  1. 10th/SSC with Science subjects and minimum 55% marks plus the relevant ITI or National/State Trade Certificate.
  2. 10th/SSC with Science subjects and minimum 55% marks plus two years of full-time apprenticeship training in the relevant trade from a recognised institution.
  3. 10th/SSC with Science subjects and minimum 55% marks plus three years of relevant work experience in the specified trade in a Ministry, Department, Organisation, PSU or Autonomous Body under the Central Government, State Government or Union Territory.

The trade must match the requirement specified for the individual post. Simply holding a higher qualification does not automatically make a candidate eligible if the prescribed minimum qualification for the particular post is not satisfied.

Age Limit for CSIR Technician 2026

The normal upper age limit is 28 years as on 17 September 2026, which is the closing date of the online application.

Age relaxation is available for eligible categories as prescribed in the notification:

  • OBC-NCL: 3 years
  • PwBD: 10 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of military service from actual age

CSIR Technician Application Fee

The application fee is Rs. 500 for candidates who are required to pay the fee.

However, women, SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen candidates are exempted from paying the application fee.

The fee is to be paid online through SBI Collect. CSIR has clearly stated that the fee will not be refunded or adjusted against another recruitment or examination.

CSIR Technician Selection Process 2026

The selection process is not based only on the written examination.

First, applications will be scrutinised by a Screening Committee. Candidates shortlisted through this process will be called for a Trade Test, which will be qualifying in nature.

Candidates who qualify in the Trade Test will then appear for the competitive written examination consisting of three papers.

The final merit list will be prepared based on marks obtained in Paper-II and Paper-III. Paper-II and Paper-III will be evaluated only for candidates who cross the minimum threshold prescribed for Paper-I.

Selection stages

Application → Screening → Trade Test → Written Examination → Final Merit List

This makes the trade-specific preparation particularly important for ITI candidates because clearing the written examination alone is not sufficient. Candidates must first qualify in the Trade Test.

CSIR Technician Exam Pattern 2026

The written examination will be conducted as an OMR-based or Computer-Based Objective Type Multiple Choice Examination.

The questions will generally be available in English and Hindi, except questions related to the English Language subject. The standard of the examination is SSC + ITI / Class 12 level.

There will be 150 questions, with a total examination duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Paper-I

Paper-I carries 50 questions for 100 marks and has a duration of one hour.

It covers the Mental Ability Test, including areas such as:

  • General Intelligence
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Reasoning
  • Problem Solving
  • Situational Judgement

There is no negative marking in Paper-I.

Paper-II

Paper-II has a duration of 30 minutes and includes:

  • General Awareness: 25 questions, 75 marks
  • English Language: 25 questions, 75 marks

Each correct answer carries three marks, while one mark is deducted for every wrong answer.

Paper-III

Paper-III is the most important trade-specific section.

It contains 50 questions for 150 marks and has a duration of one hour. Questions will be based on the concerned trade.

There is also one negative mark for every wrong answer in Paper-III.

CSIR has stated that the detailed syllabus for the Trade Test and Paper-III will be notified separately on its official website.

CSIR Technician Salary and Other Benefits

The Technician (1) post comes under Pay Matrix Level-2, with a basic pay scale of Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 63,200.

Apart from pay, employees are eligible for allowances such as HRA and travelling allowance at applicable Central Government rates. The notification also mentions benefits including Leave Travel Concession, reimbursement of medical expenses and Children’s Education Allowance as per CSIR rules.

Accommodation may also be provided under CSIR Residence Allotment Rules, subject to availability. Where accommodation is provided, HRA will not be admissible.

New entrants will be covered under the National Pension System (NPS) as applicable to new entrants in Central Government service. CSIR also provides career advancement opportunities through its Assessment Promotion Scheme for Technical and Support staff.

Important Document and Application Rules

One important point in this recruitment is that candidates must ensure consistency between the online application and their original certificates.

Names, dates of birth and parents’ names should be entered as they appear on the relevant educational certificates. If an applicant claims an equivalent qualification, the required official order or notification supporting that equivalence must also be produced.

For experience-based eligibility, the experience certificate should clearly mention the period of employment, joining and relieving dates, nature of work and other required details. Part-time work, daily-wage work and visiting or guest faculty experience will not be counted for shortlisting.

Candidates already working in Government, autonomous organisations or PSUs must pay special attention to the NOC requirement. The notification states that such candidates are required to provide an NOC at the time of the Trade Test, failing which they will not be permitted to appear for the test.

CSIR Technician Recruitment 2026: Important Dates

Event Date
Online application begins 18 August 2026
Application/fee submission begins 18 August 2026, 10:00 AM
Last date for fee submission 17 September 2026, 5:00 PM
Last date for online application 17 September 2026, 5:00 PM

CSIR has advised applicants not to wait until the final day. The notification specifically warns that the deadline will not be extended because of last-minute server problems, heavy website traffic or other technical difficulties.

A Key Point for ITI Candidates

For ITI candidates, this recruitment offers an opportunity to enter a major national research organisation through technical support positions.

However, candidates should not assume that having an ITI certificate automatically guarantees selection. CSIR will screen applications, conduct a qualifying Trade Test and then conduct the written examination. The final merit is based on the prescribed written-test components after candidates clear the required stages.

Candidates should therefore prepare in two directions: first, strengthen practical knowledge of their ITI trade for the Trade Test, and second, prepare Mental Ability, General Awareness, English and the concerned trade subject for the written examination.

CSIR Technician Recruitment 2026: Notification

The CSIR Technician Recruitment 2026 is a significant opportunity for candidates with ITI and relevant technical qualifications. With 43 Group-C vacancies, a Level-2 pay scale of Rs. 19,900-63,200, trade-specific posts and Central Government service benefits, the recruitment is worth considering for eligible candidates.

The most important thing is to check the eligibility for the exact trade before applying. Candidates should also keep their certificates ready, complete the live-photo and document-upload requirements correctly, and submit the application well before 17 September 2026 at 5:00 PM.

The official notification also makes it clear that submitting an online application does not by itself confirm eligibility. Applications remain subject to scrutiny, and candidates can be rejected later if the required qualifications, documents or other conditions are not satisfied.
