Agriculture Minister Catches Fertilizer Overpricing During Surprise Inspection
In a separate development, West Bengal Agriculture Minister Becharam Manna conducted a surprise inspection at fertilizer shops in Panskura, East Midnapore, after receiving complaints that farmers were being charged more than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
During the inspection, officials reportedly found evidence that fertilizers were being sold at prices significantly above the printed MRP.
According to the minister, some dealers and retailers were charging farmers Rs.300 to Rs.400 more per bag for products including urea, DAP, and other agricultural fertilizers.
Minister Warns Dealers of Strict Legal Action
Speaking during the inspection, the minister said the government had already held meetings with fertilizer companies, wholesalers, dealers, and retailers nearly a month ago. They had been clearly instructed to sell fertilizers strictly at the MRP printed on the packaging.
Despite those warnings, complaints continued to emerge from different districts that farmers were being forced to pay inflated prices.
The minister stated that the authorities caught the violations during the raid and confirmed that legal action would be taken against those responsible.
