Swasthya Sathi Card Be Stopped? West Bengal politics has changed completely in 2026. After ruling the state for nearly 15 years, the Trinamool Congress has lost power, and the BJP is now preparing to form the new government with a huge majority of around 207 seats.
But while political celebrations are happening on one side, common people across Bengal are worried about something much bigger: healthcare. The biggest question right now is about the state’s health scheme, Swasthya Sathi. Thousands of patients, private hospitals, nursing homes, and middle-class families are confused about what happens next.
- Will Swasthya Sathi continue?
- Will patients still get treatment?
- Will hospitals accept the card?
- Or will the new BJP government launch Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in West Bengal instead?
Right now, nobody has a confirmed answer.
The new Chief Minister’s name has not yet been officially announced. The government formation process is still going on. No official notification has been published yet regarding Swasthya Sathi or Ayushman Bharat in Bengal.
That is why confusion is increasing every day.
Private hospitals and nursing home owners are also waiting for clarity. Many are unsure whether Swasthya Sathi patients will continue getting cashless treatment or whether new rules will come after the BJP government officially takes charge.
At the moment, both patients and hospitals are standing in uncertainty.
However, many political observers believe that if the BJP forms the government in Bengal, there is a strong possibility that Ayushman Bharat may finally be implemented in the state, similar to many other BJP-ruled states across India.
But again, this is still not officially confirmed.
If Ayushman Bharat starts in West Bengal in the future, then many people may need to understand new eligibility rules, registration systems, hospital lists, and card generation processes. Some families may become eligible automatically, while others may need fresh verification.
Until an official government order comes, everything remains uncertain.
According to the All Bengal Private Nursing Home and Hospital Owners Association,
healthcare services for poor patients should not stop during this political transition in West Bengal.
Speaking to Smart Update24, the association’s secretary, Syed Asraf Hossen, said that the Swasthya Sathi Card should be stopped, but they have already informed member hospitals and nursing homes across the state to continue providing treatment under the Swasthya Sathi scheme until any official government order is issued.
He stated that thousands of poor and middle-class families depend on such healthcare schemes for treatment, and hospitals do not want patients to suffer because of political changes.
According to him, healthcare is a humanitarian issue, not a political one.
He also expressed hope that the upcoming government will take a balanced and proper decision regarding the future of Swasthya Sathi and any possible implementation of Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal.
What is Ayushman Bharat?
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, also known as PM-JAY, is the central government’s largest health insurance scheme. It provides cashless treatment coverage of up to 5 lakh per family every year in empanelled government and private hospitals across India.
The scheme is managed by the National Health Authority.
In many states, Ayushman Bharat cards are already being used for hospital treatment.
If Ayushman Bharat Starts in Bengal, Who May Become Eligible?
As per existing national rules followed in other states, eligibility is generally based on SECC data, poor and vulnerable families, and certain socio-economic conditions. In 2024, the central government also expanded coverage for all citizens aged 70 and above.
Possible eligible groups may include:
- Economically weaker families
- Rural poor households
- Certain urban workers
- Families already listed in government databases
- Senior citizens aged 70+ under the new national expansion
But for West Bengal, final rules will only be known if the new state government officially adopts the scheme.
How to Apply for Ayushman Bharat?
If the scheme becomes active in Bengal, the process may work similarly to other states.
People can usually:
- Visit the official beneficiary portal PM-JAY Beneficiary Portal
- Check eligibility using mobile number, ration card, Aadhaar, or family details.
- Verify identity through OTP and Aadhaar authentication.
- Generate or download the Ayushman Card digitally.
- Use the card in empanelled hospitals for cashless treatment.
People may also apply through Common Service Centres (CSC) or authorised hospitals.

If Bengal joins the scheme later, these documents may be needed:
- Aadhaar Card
- Ration Card
- Mobile Number
- Address Proof
- Income-related documents, in some cases
- Family identification details
What About Swasthya Sathi Card Holders?
This is currently the biggest unanswered question in Bengal.
There is still no official clarification on:
- Whether Swasthya Sathi will continue
- Whether both schemes will run together
- Whether Swasthya Sathi cards will stop
- Whether patients will need fresh registration
- Whether private hospitals will shift to Ayushman Bharat
Until the new government officially announces its healthcare policy, everything remains under discussion.
For now, patients are advised not to panic and wait for official notification from the upcoming Bengal government and the health department.
Because when it comes to healthcare, people’s lives matter more than politics.
