WB Teachers Census Duty 2026: The Government of West Bengal Directorate of School Education, Bikash Bhawan, 7th Floor, Salt Lake City, Kolkata-700091, has released a notification for the ‘Instruction on the Census duty of teachers of the Schools’.
has issued a fresh instruction regarding the deployment of school teachers for census-related duties. The directive, issued on August 19, 2026, places emphasis on ensuring that students’ academic interests are not adversely affected while teachers are engaged in census work.
The instruction was issued by the Joint Director of School Education, West Bengal, from Bikash Bhawan, Salt Lake City, Kolkata.
WB Teachers Census Duty: What does the new instruction say?
According to Memo No. 1154 (46)-Sc/Apt, dated August 19, 2026, the Directorate has informed the concerned authorities about the latest direction regarding teachers assigned to census duty.
The memo has been addressed to the Chairpersons/Secretaries of the District Primary School Councils across West Bengal, K.P.S.C. and Siliguri P.S.C., as well as the District Inspectors of Schools (P.E.) of all districts.
The department has referred to an earlier communication, Memo No. 1153-Sc/Apt dated August 19, 2026, issued following a request from the Commissioner of School Education, West Bengal.
Teachers can be utilised for census duty
The latest communication states that the Commissioner of School Education requested the Senior Special Secretary, Home and Hills Department, West Bengal, to utilise teachers for census-related duties.
However, the department has clearly highlighted an important condition. While teachers may be deployed for census work, the academic interests of students must not be adversely affected.
This means the authorities have been asked to follow the instructions of the Census authority while ensuring that the regular academic activities of schools are not unnecessarily disrupted.
WB Teachers Census Duty: Earlier memo dated August 3 withdrawn
One of the key points in the latest order is the withdrawal of an earlier office memorandum.
The Directorate has specifically instructed the concerned authorities to treat Memo No. 708(46)-Sc/P dated August 3, 2026, as withdrawn.
Therefore, the latest communication dated August 19 should be treated as the updated instruction on the matter.
What does this mean for school teachers?
The order does not indicate that teachers are being completely exempted from census duty. Instead, it provides a fresh framework under which teachers may be utilised for census-related responsibilities.
At the same time, the education department has stressed the importance of protecting students’ academic interests. Schools and concerned authorities will therefore need to coordinate teacher deployment in a way that minimises disruption to classroom teaching.
The latest direction is particularly important for teachers and school authorities because it replaces the earlier instruction dated August 3 and provides the department’s updated position on census duty.
